Corgi Toys

Primary tabs

Corgi Toys, now a division of Hornby Hobbies Ltd., is a U.K.-based retailer specializing in die-cast cars, planes, and other vehicles. Corgi Toys was launched in 1956 as an offshoot of Mettoy Playcraft and was originally based in Swansea, Wales. The company's name and logo honor that country's iconic canine, the Welsh Corgi. Corgi Toys became famous for its attention to detail. Its die-cast cars were larger than those produced by its competitors, and they were among the first model cars to feature molded interiors, opening doors and bonnets, and jewelled headlights. Corgi cars were touted as "The Ones With Windows." Corgi Toys produced many toy vehicles as movie and pop culture tie-ins; perhaps the most famous was a replica of James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 from the movie, "Goldfinger", complete with hidden machine guns and an ejector seat. To date, that particular model has sold well over 10 million units and is the best selling model car ever produced. The company was acquired by Horby Hobbies in 2008 and is now headquartered in Leicester, England. It continues to produce quality toys and collectable models with a particular focus on classic cars and aviation as well as as high-profile racing vehicles. While the manufacturer aims to cater to fine collectors, Corgi cars are still toys at heart and therefore built to last. Most models are appropriate for children over three years of age.
